The 2011 European Multidisciplinary Cancer Congress (ECCO-ESMO 2011), was held on 23–27 September 2011 in Stockholm, Sweden.
At ECCO-ESMO 2011, an AstraZeneca sponsored satellite symposium entitled ‘Advanced NSCLC: current concepts and future development of targeted treatment’ was held. The symposium was presented by an international panel of leading oncology experts:
- Dr Martin Reck (Chair), Germany
- Professor Fabrice Barlesi, France
- Dr James Yang, Taiwan
- Dr Bruce Johnson, USA
The symposium addressed recent developments in the molecular and genetic basis of advanced non-small-cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC), and considered tailored treatment strategies according to the EGFR mutation status of a patient's tumour. The symposium also explored the benefits of implementing individualised treatment strategies in the first-line setting and discussed the evidence available to guide treatment choices following disease progression. The faculty then considered how current treatment strategies for EGFR mutation-positive advanced NSCLC are evolving before discussing future treatment approaches. Interactive patient case studies focusing on EGFR-TKI treatment strategies were then presented and audience feedback was invited.

Please note that this symposium contains information about the first-line use of gefitinib in EGFR mutation-positive advanced NSCLC. Gefitinib product licences vary from country to country and not all licences include first-line use in EGFR mutation-positive advanced NSCLC. Please consult your local prescribing information.
