The 7th Asia Pacific International Academy of Pathology Congress (APIAP 2011) was held in Taipei, Taiwan on 20 - 24 May.
At APIAP 2011 an AstraZeneca sponsored satellite symposium entitled 'EGFR mutation testing: guiding treatment for advanced non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC)' was held. The symposium was presented by an international panel of leading pathology experts:
- Dr Teh-Ying Chou (Taiwan; chair)
- Dr Kaoru Kubota (Japan) - Clinical outcomes in advanced NSCLC: the importance of EGFR mutation testing
- Dr Manuel Salto-Tellez (UK) - EGFR mutation testing: the pathologist's role in guiding treatment decisions
The symposium highlighted the importance of confirming a patient's EGFR mutation status in guiding treatment decisions for advanced NSCLC and summarised current best practise for delivering EGFR mutation testing. The challenges and key considerations for pathologists, working within a multidisciplinary team, in delivering EGFR mutation testing were explored in plenary sessions and extended panel discussions.
Below are two videos featuring members of the panel discussing the clinical implications of the information presented at the symposium

Please note that this symposium contains information about the first-line use of gefitinib in EGFR mutation-positive advanced NSCLC. Gefitinib product licences vary from country to country and not all licences include first-line use in EGFR mutation-positive advanced NSCLC. Please consult your local prescribing information.
